Introduction to SWUFE

Included in the “211 Project”, and “985 Feature Project”, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics is a national key university under the direct caidaistration of the Ministry of Education. As the posterity of the Shanghai Guanghua University moving to the inland China because of anti-Japanese War, the University was finally located in Chengdu which boasts of the Land of Abundance. At present, the university is comprised of two campuses: Guanghua and Liulin campuses, which occupies the floor space of 250 mu.

In 1952, when the colleges and departments of business and economics from 17 universities were restructured, the university was founded as Sichuan Institute of Finance and Economics which houses many famous economists such as Peng Dixian, Chen Baoyin, Li Xiaotong, Mei Yuanmou, Li Hongkang, Yang Youzhi, Tang Xianglong, LiuShibai. From 1980 to 2000, the University was guided by the People’s Bank of China (PBC), which added to the disciplinary development of finance. In 1995, the University was listed in the “211 Project”. In 2000, it was transferred to the governance of Ministry of Education. For more than 50 years, the University has developed a multi-disciplined and coordinated pattern with financial programs as core, economics and management programs as mainstream.  

Presently, the University offers 37 doctoral, 67 master’s and 32 bachelor’s degree programs in 27 departments and schools. It also has 4 National Key Disciplines, that is, finance, political economics, statistics and accounting. So far, 1700 faculty and staff members work on the campuses, among them there are 1,100 teachers and researchers, 5 Yangtse Rive Scholars, 7 overseas professors serving as the heads of schools and more than 130 overseas PhD holders. Since the founding of the University, 140,000 graduates at all levels of degree programs have contributed to the building of the nation. Among them, 40,000 ones work in the financial institutions and banking systems, and 3, 000 ones take the charge of the banks at all levels. The University has been praised as the base of financial talents.

The University gives top priority to scientific research and academic achievements. With establishment of China Finance Research Center and West China Economic Research Center, it has become the base for the Ministry of Education Social Science Research. Since reform and opening up, it produced nearly 18,000 research findings, 400 national/ provincial key research projects, and received over 300 awards at national and provincial (ministerial) levels. The publications written by teachers and researchers have won many awards at state and provincial (ministerial) levels, such as the “Five One Project” award. As the excellent social sciences journal in China, Economist is listed in the “Chinese Journals Formation” and the “Journals of Double Effects”, the graded scales decided by General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Bank of China. Science of Finance and Economics is included in the national core journals in economics.  

Being open-minded, the University has established sound relationships with more than 50 educational and financial institutions, renowned universities, and famous enterprises in nearly 30 countries and areas. Every year, it also invites more than 100 foreign scholars to deliver lectures on long-term and short-term basis. And about 200 overseas students from more than 10 countries pursue their college studies here.

Implementing the strategy of invigorating China through the development of science and education, the University is giving full play to its advantages, aiming at establishing a “finance-related disciplinary group” and “West China economic think-tank”. It also endeavors to construct itself as one of the best domestic universities with world reputation in the middle of this century.
